Under the federal No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining the expected cost of your health care services.
If you do not have health insurance or you choose not to use your health insurance, health care providers are generally required to provide you with an estimate of the expected charges for your care, including psychotherapy and counseling services.
When you can expect one
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate in writing:
- when you schedule services, at least 1 business day before your appointment, and
- any time you ask for one, within 3 business days of your request.
You may also ask for a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling a service.
If your bill is higher than your estimate
If you receive a bill that is $400 or more above the amount listed on your Good Faith Estimate, you may be eligible to dispute the bill through the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process. You must start the dispute process within 120 calendar days of the date on your bill.
Please keep a copy or photograph of your Good Faith Estimate for your records.
